What are Electrical Subpanels?

In order to explain what an electrical subpanel is, we must first start with an explanation of the circuit breaker box. This is referred to as the “service panel”. It is the main point of entry for the power feed from a utility company that enters a building from the meter.

It serves as the main point where all power is then distributed to the various circuits of the building.

The subpanel is a small service panel. It is designed to ensure the distribution of electricity to a certain part of a building.

Many professionals may refer to this panel as a “satellite circuit breaker panel”.

It possesses its own electrical breakers. It may be placed in any location and must be a minimum of one foot away from the main breaker box panel. It is fed by a special 240-volt breaker. It then branches off into additional circuits. It does not increase the amperage of the building; rather, it helps reduce the load from the main circuit breaker panel.

What is the Purpose of an Electrical Subpanel?

In short, the purpose of an electrical subpanel is to reduce the electrical load that is placed on the main breaker panel within a building.

These devices are designed so that they are able to successfully break up the electrical needs throughout a building. By adding an electrical subpanel, the electrical system of a building is not overloaded. As a result, fuses, wires, and other components will not melt and the breakers of the system will not trip.

What is the Difference Between the Main Breaker Box and the Subpanel Box?

The main difference between the main breaker box and a subpanel box is that the main box takes in the power that comes from a utility company. The subpanel serves as a type of middle-ground area for other types of different circuits that are actually connected directly to your property.

What is Considered a Subpanel?

A subpanel is a secondary type of breaker box. It is designed to split the electrical-based load of the building so that many areas within the structure may be provided with an ample level of electricity. In other instances, the subpanel may also be utilized to isolate a certain section from the large building from another section of the same building.

How Do I Know if a Subpanel is Needed?

If you have a main breaker box that is servicing a large building and you need additional room to integrate new circuits, you likely need a subpanel.

Prior to installation, you will need a licensed electrician to evaluate the main breaker box to ensure that it possesses the capacity to property support a subpanel.

How Many Breakers May Be Placed Within a Subpanel?

In most instances, the number of breakers that you want placed within an electrical subpanel is up to you. You will have to work with an electrician in order to determine what your local code enforcement has in place – as far as specific requirements. Also, the electrician will be able to make an advisory on the maximum that should be placed within the unit in order to accommodate the capabilities associated with the main circuit breaker. Remember, subpanels only reduce the amount of work or the load that is placed on the main breaker unit – it does not increase the amperage capabilities.

What are the Benefits of Installing Electrical Subpanels?

There are many benefits associated with installing electrical subpanels. These include – but are not limited to – the following:

Increased Space – If you have a large building with increased electrical demand, you may discover that you do not have room to add additional breakers within the main service box. By integrating electrical subpanels, you are increasing the amount of space that you have available within the building – as a whole.

Wire Organization – When you utilize an electrical subpanel, you will find that it is possible to better organize the wiring of your electrical system. Not only do these help in organization, but they also aid in ensuring that you do not have to do any extra work within the structure – such as cutting into walls or having to gain access to the current wiring within the ceiling.

Circuitry Isolation – If you are doing an upgrade or a remodel, an electrical subpanel will assist in isolating the circuitry to various locations within the building. This will help you identify what electricity runs where – which will save you time and money in the future. In other words, for a new room, you would know that the new subpanel services that room. For an old room, you would know that it is serviced directly by the main service box or another subpanel that has already been installed within the large building.

How Much Does It Cost to Place an Electrical Subpanel in the Building?

The costs of electrical subpanels will be determined by many different factors. These include your location, the amperage of the panel, and the circuits that you will have placed within the unit. In most instances, they can average anywhere from $400.00 to over $2,000.00. In order to determine pricing, you will need to enlist the assistance of an electrical company that specializes in the panels for an inspection and a quote on the project. Remember, only go with companies that have electricians that are both licensed and insured for the project. For immediate assistance, give us a call.

Imagine your business. It is an average, ordinary day. Your employees are buzzing with an exceptional level of productivity. They are staying on task. Your products are quickly being manufactured. Suddenly -without any indication or prior warning – the entire building goes dark. You have no lights. Your machinery is inoperable. There is no internet access. Do you have a standby power source as an emergency backup in case of a power outage? If not, now is the time. Purchase and install a generator immediately. Once you do, set up a generator maintenance plan. Failure to do so could result in your still experiencing issues in the future should a power failure occur.

Power Outages are Inconvenient and Costly

If you experience a power outage and your generator has not been properly maintained, it is likely that it will fail – leaving your business in the dark and the sounds of productivity a distant memory. Only silence will remain. Everything you are working for immediately halts – including your profits. It could be a blown transformer, high winds, a severe storm, a heat wave, a rolling blackout – it does not matter.

There is no way to predict power outages or their cause; however, one thing you can be sure of is this.

With a properly maintained backup generator, what could be hours, days, or even weeks with no power instantly transitions to mere seconds.

Every single second your business is without power is a second that is costing your business. Your product lines will cease operation. Your production levels will grind to a halt. Machinery and other components could become damaged. You are unable to get your products to your customers. In a split second, you have gone from a productive, profitable business to one that is quickly accumulating debt. Lack of productivity will result in employee and customer dissatisfaction.

It only takes an instant for your reputation – your brand – to be on the line. Do not subject yourself to this. Once you have that generator installed, create a regularly scheduled maintenance plan to ensure that it does not fail you when you need it most.

What Are the Main Problems a Power Outage Could Cause in a Business?

There are MANY problems that may be incurred as a result of a power outage. This is especially true when it comes to a business. The following outlines the main problems a power disruption could cause your company:

The machinery and other equipment in your business could become damaged due to the surges that often accompany a power outage. As a result, you could find yourself spending thousands on repairs and/or replacements.

Your production line will go down and come to a complete stop. As a result, you will immediately start to suffer from monetary losses.

Information and data that you have stored on electronic devices and/or in electronic file systems could experience such immense levels of damage that it is all lost – without a trace.

Due to the lack of electrical components – such as standard lighting and emergency lighting – your employees are at a high risk of slipping, tripping, falling, and experiencing some other type of injury which may prove to be extremely costly for your company.

Both your employees and your customers experience a high level of inconvenience due to the inoperable components and non-functioning IT system that you have in place.

Commercial Generator Used for Business. source

Why Should a Business Invest in a Regular Maintenance Plan for Their Generator System?

You may think that having a generator for your business is enough. Truth be told, it may be for a year or so; however, it is critical that you have a regular maintenance plan in place for that generator system. The following outlines several reasons why you should invest in this type of plan:

If your business experiences loss of power, it is imperative that you have a standby backup system to ensure that there is a continuity in the standard operations of your facility. The regularly scheduled maintenance plan will help to confirm that the generator system is in optimal working order – at all times. This plan will provide you with a solid peace of mind in terms of continual electric coverage. Remember, failure to plan will result in your plans to fail. No power = NO PROFITS!

While it is true that not having a regularly scheduled maintenance plan for your generator system may save you a little money, it is also true that it will cost you more – in the long run. The potential losses associated with power failure will end up costing much more than the little that you will save. Not only does generator repairs get costly fast, your business will experience numerous monetary losses.

If you have the generator system of your business regularly maintained, the technicians that handle it will help in optimizing the overall efficiency of the system. They will review the main components of the system, clean out any type of debris that has accumulated in the system, and test the unit. If any steps are necessary, they will complete those steps – which will improve its overall functionality and its general level of efficiency.

As a business owner, you have many responsibilities. While all of these obligations are essential and hold a high level of importance to the day-to-day operations of your business, the most important is ensuring the safety of the building where you operate your company. An electrical inspection is not only for you and your employees, but also for the vendors, suppliers, and consumers that frequent your business.

One of the most critical aspects to ensuring safety at your business is having your electrical system regularly inspected and required maintenance performed on a regular basis.

What is a Business Electrical Inspection?

A business electrical inspection is an evaluation that is performed within a structure that houses a commercial business. This inspection will review all electrical-based components, wires, and structures to ensure that they all adhere to the safety standards as outlined legally in a given area.

Most commercial electricians that perform electrical inspections in business settings will utilize the information as set out in the national electric code to gauge the safety of said business.

What is the National Electric Code?

The National Electric Code or NEC is a set of standards that is regularly updated regarding the safety of the installation of electrical wiring. The guidelines as put forth by this code aids in the prevention of fires and other types of electrical-based accidents.

Commercial electricians, residential electricians, and contractors utilize the National Electric Code in order to ensure that electrical installations are legal, adhere to all associated codes, and are completely safe.

The National Electric Code is part of a private trade organization known as the National Fire Protection Association.

How Often Should a Commercial Business Have an Electrical Inspection?

Ideally, your business should be inspected by a commercial electrician at least once a year. This is if you truly want to stay on top of things and ensure optimal safety of the structure.

Generally, though, most recommend a commercial electric inspection once every 3-5 years.

Who is Responsible for Electrical Inspections in Commercial Buildings?

The landlord or owner of the property of the commercial business is responsible for an electrical inspection of the business. It is the owner’s responsibility to arrange electrical inspections on a periodic basis. This inspection should include both visual evaluation and electrical testing. This should be done once every 3-5 years and also if the occupancy of the building changes.

Do Commercial Properties Need a Certificate of Electrical Safety?

Yes, the owner of the commercial property is required to provide electrical safety certificates to the tenants of the structure if they make a request.

What Types of Electrical Tests are Commonly Performed on Commercial Buildings?

There are a total of 3 types of electrical tests that are commonly performed on a building that has commercial tenants:

Circuit Breaker Functionality – The commercial electrician will test all isolators, RCDs, and circuit breakers of the building. They will verify that these components are properly maintained and that they are properly labelled. Then, they will test to confirm that the components may be disconnected from the building’s main electrical supply if the need arises.

Protective Conductor Test – This test will ensure that all of the protective conductors that are part of the circuit are working properly and adhere to the legal electrical standards. Furthermore, all will be evaluated to ensure proper connectivity.

Polarity Testing – The test will measure the polarity of the main supply box, the socket outlets, the distribution board, and any type of power supply within the building. This test is performed using a multi-tester or a continuity tester designed for commercial building applications.

What is an Electrical Test Certificate?

An electrical test certificate is a special certificate that is generated by a commercial electrician. It is designed to inform those who evaluate the certificate that the electrical installation, the electrical wiring, and all other components of the electrical system are fully compliant with the standards as outlined in BS 7671.

If you own and operate a storage facility, you have uncovered a wonderful means of creating a passive income. This is an industry that has taken off in the last several years. In the United States alone, the self-storage unit space reached a whopping 60 million square feet in 2020 and continues to grow.

Facilities charge an average of $1.20 and up for each square foot of space provided in the storage industry. Once the units are in place, very little must be done to run a self-storage unit except the collection of rent on those units.

The simple fact of the matter is, that there is always a way to improve upon your business and increase your earnings.

In the storage industry, one of the most productive measures you may take includes adding electricity to the units that you rent out.

By doing this, you will find that you are able to take the units and transition them into an automated money-making machine! There will be a bit of an initial expense. In short, this comes down to a commercial electrician. You want to ensure electricity is installed safely and to codes. That is it! Here, we will outline the benefits of having electricity installed in your self-storage facility.

1. Climate Control

The first advantage to having electricity installed in your facility is that it opens up the opportunity for you to offer climate-controlled storage units. It is a known fact that excessive heat can result in vast arrays of damage to belongings.

Melting, fading, and even warping are all issues that individuals find that they experience when choosing a standard storage unit with no climate control options. In addition to providing a safe place for belongings for your customers, you may also charge more for the space – which puts more money into your pocket from your business!

2. Attracting Businesses

If you have a storage facility that has electricity running through it that may be accessed by your customers, you will instantly attract businesses that require additional space.

This provides an area that is climate-controlled and safe for storing tools, equipment, files, and even excess inventory without fear of damage. Plus, those with electricity have better levels of security.

To optimize this opportunity, you could even make a special section, especially for businesses that want climate control, enhanced security monitoring, and access to outlets. Once you do this, you will quickly find that your profits soar!

3. Artists and Hobbyists

In addition to attracting businesses, having electricity added to your storage facility units will attract artists and hobbyists that require a safe, climate-controlled area to store additional products.

Examples include paints, scrapbooking supplies, crafts, musical instruments, files, and projects.

The electrical aspect of your business will provide people and groups with areas where sensitive items may be safely stored – without cluttering up their homes. Additionally, it prevents many – such as bands – from having to rent expensive office space for additional storage.

4. Family Heirlooms

All families have heirlooms that they want to keep safe. If storage units have electricity, they are more likely to choose those areas for storing special items. Examples include family pictures, frames, artwork, and furniture.

If you offer climate-controlled units, you will find that many individuals are attracted to your business because of the need to have a space to store antiques and other items of value.

5. Additional Rooms

If you include electricity in your storage facility, you will be able to create spaces that people may use as rooms.

These include recording studios, places to rehearse music, or similar activities.

Now, there will be some measures that you will have to take – legally – to create these types of spaces. Once you do, though, you will instantly find that you attract people and groups that are willing to pay large amounts of money to access the areas.

The electrical system within a warehouse is designed to handle a large assortment of power demands. These include industrial lighting systems, operating machinery, internet networks, security systems, and even electrically-charged vehicles and equipment.

By having the appropriate components and safety devices in place, you are taking a proactive step in preventing workplace injuries, meeting electrical regulations, and ensuring that the productivity levels of your business are optimized. In this brief article, we will share some measures that you may take to properly protect your warehouse from electrical hazards.

The Most Common Electrical Hazards

The following outlines the most common electrical hazards present within a warehouse:

Overloaded Circuits

Inadequate Grounding

Wires That are Torn or Frayed

Lack of Safety Components

Failure to Install Special Lockout Devices

Outlets Near Conductors

Failure to Regularly Maintain Equipment

Human Error

Carelessness

Failure to Replace Malfunctioning Components

Steps to Prevent Electrical Hazards Within the Warehouse

The following outlines certain steps that must be taken in order to prevent electrical hazards from occurring within a warehouse:

You should make certain that all of the employees within your warehouse are properly trained to ensure that no electrical-based accident occurs. An investment into a comprehensive program that covers safety is a wise investment for warehouse owners and/or operators.

Employees should be provided with the appropriate personal protective equipment. This includes – but is not limited to – clothing that is flame-resistant, safety goggles or glasses, gloves, and items that are similar in nature. Additionally, each employee should be trained in the proper utilization of personal protective equipment and policies must be in place that ensures that the employees are required to use their PPE.

Employees should be provided with the proper equipment for any type of electrical work and that equipment must be in good working order at all times. One example of such equipment is an electrical meter.

Safety devices should be installed throughout the warehouse. These include Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters or GFCIs. Once installed, these devices should be tested on a regular basis. When installing AFCIs and the circuit breakers for your facility, make sure that they are selected based on the environment of your warehouse and the load that is required within that environment.

A qualified commercial electrician should be scheduled to thoroughly test and carefully inspect all of the electrical components in your warehouse on a regular basis. Should repairs need to be done, they should be done immediately. If replacements are necessary, they should be taken care of as quickly as possible.

All lockout devices, outlets, and wires should be evaluated on a regular basis. Worn or damaged components should be repaired or replaced quickly.

Safety audits should be performed at regular intervals. Most would agree that once a year is sufficient; however, to truly stay on top of that which is going on in your warehouse, we recommend these audits be done at least once every six months.

You should put in a plan for your warehouse that prepares the facility for severe weather issues – such as lightning strikes. This may mean additional grounding or spreading out the electrical load throughout the entire facility rather than just pushing all electrical loads together.

Fire inspections should be performed on a regular basis. Not only do electrical components need to be checked, but also you should ensure that if a fire were to occur, your employees could vacate the premises quickly and in a safe manner. Fire inspections will help you achieve success in both of these endeavors.

Make certain that all of the electrical system’s components are installed and running in such a way that meets the design and overall maintenance standards as put together by OSHA. Remember, any sub-standard installations and faulty electrical components would lead to electrocution and fire.

When you place or replace light bulbs into a fixture, lamp, or other devices, it is imperative that you use the proper bulb with the appropriate wattage for that product. Many people do not realize it, but there are a few problems that may occur from using light bulbs that are the wrong wattage.

While there are many variables that must be considered when buying light bulbs – such as the size and the type – the most important of these is the wattage. Failure to use bulbs that are the proper wattage could result in serious dangers. Continue reading to learn more.

Wattage That is Too High

If you have an electrical fixture that calls for a certain wattage light bulb like an emergency light or exit sign, it is imperative that you only buy those that match that wattage. If you buy one that has higher wattage than what is called for, you stand the chance of the bulb experiencing overheating.

This is also referred to as “overlamping”.

While this may not seem like too big of an issue, it is. It could result in the actual socket melting. As this happens, the insulative casing surrounding the wires within the fixture will also become worn.

In both cases, there is a very high risk of the development of a fire.

Additionally, if you elect to use a bulb that has a higher watt label than is advised for your electrical fixture, it could result in direct damage to your fixture.

Not only will this result in your having to engage in either the repair or the complete replacement of that fixture, but it could also pose a fire risk.

This could happen within the fixture itself, or it could result in sparks that may catch on surrounding items such as insulation, walls, curtain, furniture pieces, and more.

What are the Main Risks of Overlamping?

It is a known fact that bulbs that have a higher wattage level quickly produce higher levels of heat. Many fixtures are unable to safely handle the level of heat that is produced. As a result, the socket will get too hot and the wires within that socket will actually start to melt.

If melting occurs, an electrical arc could quickly develop.

This occurs when sparks jump from one wire to another. These are often referred to as “arc faults”.

This could cause an electrical discharge to occur. If this happens, a fire could develop. It could be worsened by flammable materials and substances that are in close proximity to the electrical fixture. If not caught in time, this type of fire can quickly destroy a structure.

source:pixabay

How to Determine the Proper Wattage

It is usually very easy to figure out what watt bulb is the safest for a fixture. Simply look at the socket or the base of the electrical fixture. It is usually after the word “Caution” and will say the maximum watts that is safe for that fixture.

If you are unable to locate the wattage information on the fixture, most electricians agree to only use 60-watt bulbs or watts under 60 watts that are able to fit within the fixture.

This is if you decide to use an incandescent bulb. If you use a CFL or LED bulb, you may be able to increase wattage safely as these do not create as much heat as the traditional incandescent.

If you have any questions about the proper wattage for your particular device or fixture, contact a professional electrician to ensure that you make the safest choice.

Is it Safe to Use Lower Wattage Bulbs?

As long as the light bulb fits into the electrical fixture properly, it is typically safe to use lower wattage bulbs. These will actually draw much less of an electrical current. Additionally, the lower the wattage, the lower the heat that is generated from the bulb.

As a result of these facts, lower wattage bulbs are much safer than using higher wattage bulbs.

Electrical Questions?

In short, what types of equipment can the kitchen currently in place actually support?

In most instances, it is advised that you hire an industrial or commercial electrician in order to evaluate the circuitry of the room prior to the purchase and utilization of the cooking equipment that you desire to integrate. In this guide, you will be introduced to some basic electrical requirement information that will help you get started on your journey. It may help to avoid potential hazards in the future.

What is an Amp?

“Amp” is short for the word “ampere”. This is the base unit associated with electrical current in what is referred to as the “International System of Units” or “SI”. In short, “amps” identify the speed of the electrons for each second.

In order to choose the best equipment and appliances for the industrial kitchen that you own and/or operate, you must know the total amp load of the electrical system that is located within your facility.

What is a Watt?

A “watt” is defined as a measure of overall power. One watt is the total work that is done when one amp of the electrical current flows through as the potential difference of one volt. It is referred to as a “joule” (which is a unit of energy) for each second.

This is the most common type of electrical identification when it comes to power consumption. It is used to measure both residential systems and business systems. Basically, it is how much total energy is capable of being released.

In short, it can help you identify the amount of work that can be done by an appliance or other type of equipment. The higher the wattage, the more power there is, in terms of output.

What is Voltage?

Voltage is the unique pressure that comes from an electrical system’s power circuit that is capable of pushing through electrons or the “current” through a loop that conducts electricity.

Voltage is known as that which pushes or moves the electrical current or the flow of electricity.

When researching appliances and equipment, you will find that each has its own requirements when it comes to voltage. Most products that you would use in an industrial kitchen will be a standard 120-voltage. Heavy-duty items may be either 208 volts or 240 volts.

When purchasing items, you have to be aware of the voltage and the metrics that are present within the electrical system of the facility that you utilize.

What is an Ohm?

An ohm is identified as the base unit of an electrical circuit. It causes resistance between two unique points. In most instances, you will not have to concern yourself too much with ohms in the industrial kitchen; however, this unit of measurement will prove to be instrumental to any commercial electrician that you elect to maintain and repair the electrical system of your establishment.

How Much Energy Does an Industrial Kitchen Use?

It is a known fact that most equipment and appliances utilized in industrial kitchens are very intensive when it comes to energy consumption.

To get an idea, a home uses about 12,000 kWh each year; however, just a deep fryer used in an industrial kitchen – alone – uses approximately 18,000 kWh.

This is a massive difference.

You will need to ensure that you have an industrial or commercial electrician come into your establishment and determine the current circuitry. These individuals will be able to specify what can be safely used.

If you use in excess of what is allowed for the circuitry, you will need to have an electrical upgrade performed in order to meet the demands of your kitchen.

What Uses the Most Electricity in an Industrial Kitchen?

We know that the refrigeration and cooking performed in an industrial kitchen use the most electricity.

It is recommended that you choose to integrate appliances and equipment used for refrigeration and cooking that are Energy Star rated. Not only will this help your establishment save on energy costs, but the products will also use significantly less energy, overall.

While it may be tempting to go with older products because the initial expense is lower, it will save you more money to have updated products that use less energy in your industrial kitchen.

What Percentage of Electrical Use in a Business with a Kitchen Comes from the Kitchen?

An industrial kitchen relies on cooking, the heating of water, lighting, and refrigeration. In total, these account for anywhere from 70% to 85% of the total electrical use in a business from the kitchen, itself.

This means that if you want to save money in your business, you should start with the kitchen.

Purchasing Energy Star equipment, utilizing natural gas, lowering temperatures (where it is safe to do so) on fryers, stoves, and hot water heaters, and using energy-efficient lighting will result in a massive amount of savings, over time.

What are Energy Star Products?

Energy Star products are those that are designed – specifically – to use less energy but still provide the quality of traditional products. These meet very strict guidelines that are put into place by the US Department of Energy as well as the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States.

What is Commercial Electrical Maintenance?

Commercial electrical maintenance consists of the testing, troubleshooting, supervision, and repairs of various components of the structure’s electrical system. It involves all aspects of the system. These include wiring, outlets, switches, protective coverings, machines, and equipment.

When a commercial electrician performs maintenance on your business, it could be as simple as an inspection or as broad as installing new wiring. In short, an electrical maintenance program is a type of preventative maintenance program for your business.

The Essentials

The following outlines why electrical maintenance is absolutely essential to your business:

If electrical maintenance is regularly scheduled in your business, it will help in minimizing the amount of downtime that you experience. This – in turn – prevents the loss of data and even the loss of revenue.

By having your electrical system property maintained, you are also playing a role in maintaining the equipment and machinery in your business. This will help in saving money on repairs, components, and complete replacement.

By having regular maintenance performed on your electrical equipment, the electrician will be able to identify issues before they become extremely serious and result in more complicated problems. The more complicated the problem, the higher the expense. Maintenance helps you to avoid repairs and replacements that are extremely expensive.

When you have regular electrical maintenance performed in your business, it helps to lengthen the overall lifecycle of the equipment and machinery that you own. This helps in preventing unnecessary replacements with the components of your equipment and machinery and extremely expensive complete replacements.

By having regular maintenance performed on your electrical system of your business, your electrician will be able to assist you in identifying drains that are due to faulty components or even those that are outdated. This can help in ensuring the highest level of energy efficiency in your business.

Electrical maintenance programs help businesses experience higher levels of productivity. Not only can downtime due to electrical problems result in unnecessary time restraints, but it can also be detrimental to the overall morale of your employees. Depending on what type of business that you have, it could negatively impact your customers or clients, too.

Workplace safety should be a priority. By having an electrical maintenance program in your business, you are providing a higher level of priority to the safety of your employees and customers. Injuries cost a lot of money. Typically, an injury in a business result in lost productivity, pushing forward with worker’s compensation claims, medical expenses, and could result in lawsuits. By having an electrical maintenance system in place, you can rest assured that this aspect of your business is as safe as possible.

By having regular maintenance performed on the electrical system of your business, you are capable of getting your company head of any type of situation that may prove to be costly and/or dangerous. You will not be burdened by frayed wires, improper grounds, worn casing, and other types of damage to the components of your electrical system.

By having maintenance performed on your electrical system, you have the capability of addressing any issues immediately and avoiding more serious, dangerous, and costly issues.

Apart from issues with the electrical components themselves, there are serious health implications and dangers associated with not getting electrical maintenance in your business.
Flickering lights are not only troublesome to those who depend on the lighting, but also quite challenging to resolve. This stems from the fact that most do not understand the underlying cause or potential causes of the issue. Flickering lights may be exceptionally difficult when experienced in a business. Not only can flickering lights cause a general lack of productivity, it may be uncomfortable for many – both in terms of employees and customers. Complications that may arise include the development of headaches, the depletion of energy, and even seizures in those that are susceptible to flashing lights. In this guide, we will outline the most common causes for light flickers in the workplace. Continue reading to learn more.

source:pexels

The Bulb

Is your workplace experiencing flickering in just one light? If so, the bulb and associated issues may be to blame. While it is possible that bulbs may be the culprit if more than one light is flickering, this is not likely.

To determine if the bulb is the culprit, simply take the bulb out of the socket and screw it back in, ensuring it is properly placed and tightly secured. If the issue continues, it could be time for a bulb replacement.

It is advised that you attempt to replace it with a LED bulb before moving on in the troubleshooting steps. If you place the new bulb in and the flickering stops, you have likely resolved the issue.

If the light continues to flicker after bulb replacement, there is another issue occurring.

Overloaded Circuit

If you continue to experience flickering light after bulb replacement, or if you have multiple lights in your business that are flickering, you may be experiencing the issue due to an overloaded circuit.

This overload typically stems from too many appliances, machines, and other items running on the same circuit.

It could also stem from a faulty circuit wire in your electrical system. Bad circuitry wiring and overloads to circuits commonly occur in older structures.

You could try reducing the electrical demand by unplugging some items and seeing if that works. If this step fails, it is imperative that you contact a professional commercial electrician immediately. You should never attempt to handle circuits or components of circuitry on your own as it could result in electrocution and/or electrical fires.

Faulty Light Hardware

Each of the lights that are located in your business are powered by both a light fixture and a light switch. If you find that your lights are flickering, either of these components may be to blame.

You will need to contact a professional electrician who is able to test the light switch and the light fixture.

If either of these are to blame for the issue, the commercial electrician will be able to quickly replace the components with very little downtime.

Naturally, you should avoid attempting replacement on your own as it could result in health hazards and the possibility of an electrical fire igniting. Both of these could prove to be exceptionally challenging to you and your business.

Loose Connections

The electrical system in your business consists of a multitude of wires and connections. If a wire becomes loose, the connections within the system will have a higher range of resistance. As a result of this, the connections will immediately start to overheat.

If you find that flickering lights are occurring in various locations of your business, it could be a result of a loose connection.

While this is a simple fix for a commercial electrician, if it is permitted to continue, the overheating process could result in the development of a fire. If you find that this situation pertains to you, contact us here at Hardcore Electric today. We will quickly evaluate and resolve the issue so that your business and the safety of you, your employees, and your customers is not put at risk.

Cable Connections

The electrical system of your business is connected to a larger power source – such as a power pole or other large system – through the means of specially-designed cables that are capable of carrying heavy power loads into the structure.

If you find that your entire business is experiencing an issue with flickering lights, the issue may not be one that you can easily resolve. It could be the cable connections that are located at the main power source or that deliver electricity into the structure.

Not only is this a fire hazard to you, but it could also pose significant risks to the buildings and/or homes that are in the immediate vicinity of your business. If you suspect cable connections are to blame, call us at Hardcore Electric for immediate assistance now.

Seek Assistance Now
