We feel that it is imperative to know that the electrical system is highly complex and consists of more than just a wide variety of wires. This system is specifically designed to ensure that you are able to obtain all of the power that you need and in the safest manner possible.
By knowing the main components of this system, you will be able to handle power-related emergencies quickly and safely, will be able to identify common culprits associated with electricity issues, and may even be able to troubleshoot issues that may arise.
The electrical system in your home consists of a few main components. First, there is typically a pole that has a line that runs to the home. Traditional systems run the line above-ground, while more modern systems run the line under the ground. There is a meter. This tallies how much electricity that your home uses. Then, there is a load center. This may also be identified as a “meter”.
If you live in an older residence, it may even be referred to as the “fuse panel”. Then, there are special wiring circuits that run to each room, each electrical fixture, lights, and appliances that are hard-wired. When you put all of this together, the following occurs in order to power your home:
- Aerial or underground transmission wires deliver power to your residence. The power is gathered from an external source that provides electricity to several poles so that those poles may then provide power to the homes in your neighborhood.
- The power goes through the meter and then directly into the home. The meter is responsible for tracking the amount of electricity that you utilize.
- When the power enters the home, it goes straight to the circuit breaker box or panel. It then takes the electricity and breaks it up into different circuits.
- Once the power goes to a specific circuit, it is then directed to the various outlets, the lights, and the hard-wired appliances that are located throughout your home.
Now that you have made it to this point, you know that the main components of your home’s electrical system are the meter, breaker panel, circuits, and wires. Oftentimes, one or more of these components may fail or require maintenance. This is where we come in, here at Hardcore Electric.
